Employee Spotlight - Geno Marchizza

September’s Spotlight is on Geno Marchizza. Geno is a State Purchasing Officer who has worked for the Executive Ethics Commission for six years. Prior to joining the Executive Ethics Commission Geno worked for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. Geno has worked in State government for six years.

Tell us something about yourself that most of us don't know:

I don't eat fruit. I can't stand the smell of it. I would rather drive back and forth past Miller's hog farm on a hot summer day with the windows down, than walk past a fruit tray at a potluck.

What was your first job or your most unusual job?

My first job was probably working on our farm as a kid. I got paid .50 for the whole summer for selling sweet corn out of the back of our truck. But right out of High School I went into the Navy where I was a Navy Diver on a submarine.

What are your five favorite foods?

Pork (of any kind), Pasta Scuitta, Chili, Grilled Veggies, and Cookies.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very good at:

I used to be good at a lot of things. Now I'm better at telling stories about "back in the day." I can speak with different accents.

What is the best perk you've had at a job?

I worked at a large corporation that encouraged participation in golf outings. I played in a lot of them, mostly during the week.

What is the best vacation you've ever had, and why?

About 3 years ago we drove down to FL and took the kids to the ocean for the first time. Seeing their reaction to the taste of saltwater for the first time was priceless!

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Hard to say but we put a lot of work into our house/land. It was a weed/timber patch when we bought it and we did a ton of work to make it what it is, from clearing the land and building a house, to the drive way, planting trees, grass, and landscaping. It looks nothing like it did when we bought it.

What is one important skill every person should have?

Common sense. Everybody has it, but some use it better than others.

What is one of the things on your bucket list?

I don't really have much of a bucket list, but one thing I would really like to do is go on a trail riding tour on my dirtbike in the Rockies.

If you could have dinner with someone who is alive or dead, who would it be and why?

My grandpa Gervasio. I never met him, but he came over from Italy when he was 17, became a US Citizen, learned French and English languages, farmed, built houses, worked in the coal mine, and made moonshine for the Mob in Chicago during prohibition.

Tell us about your pets:

We have four cats: Lucy (the princess), Cecil Bean, Tigger, and Lucky Luciano.
And two dogs: Fern and Dixie

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was really little, the old guys at the VFW used to laugh when they ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up because I would say, "I want to be a professional Bum!" I didn't even know what it was at the time.  But I would say the first thing I wanted to be that I knew what it was, would be FBI/CIA agent.

What is the last book you read?

Lone Survivor, by Marcus Luttrell. Simply an outstanding read, I highly recommend that to anyone who hasn't read it yet.

Lone Survivor, by Marcus Luttrell. Simply an outstanding read, I highly recommend that to anyone who hasn't read it yet.

What is your favorite season (winter, spring, summer, or fall), and why?

Fall and winter because of football and wrestling.  And I love cutting and splitting wood and having bon fires and fires in the fireplace.

Have you ever played a musical instrument? Which one?

In Jr High for a couple years I played clarinet, because we had one and dad wouldn't buy a trumpet. Then I took piano lessons for a short time, but I can't play either one. I wish I knew how to play a guitar.
